The rules

  1. Open a date

    Yesterday, today and tomorrow are live. Today's news lands on today's board within the hour. Pick between two brings up the rest of a date, two at a time.

  2. Three buzzes for each hive

    Yesterday, today and tomorrow each have their own three. Tap Buzz on the stories you think matter. Each buzz makes that story's tile bigger. There is no downvote and no way to say a thing did not matter.

  3. All three stay open

    You can spend three buzzes on each open hive until it seals.

  4. Midnight seals it

    At midnight Eastern the hive locks. No edits and no do overs. That board is what people thought mattered, for good.

  5. Come back next year

    The same date opens a new hive and the old one stays. Put them side by side and you can see what actually lasted.

How a story gets on the hive

Nobody writes the stories and nobody picks the winners. They come from two places, and buzzes decide the rest.

  1. Every hour

    The news lands

    Birthed reads the public feeds of news sites and files each new story under today. The same story from five outlets is one tile, with all five under it. Most headlines that are opinion, lists, reviews or shopping are left out.

  2. Already there

    The date's past waits in the pool

    What happened on the date in history, who was born on it and what was number one are all filed too, from Wikipedia and Wikidata. They wait off the board until somebody buzzes them. Pick between two shows them two at a time.

  3. You

    A buzz pulls a story up

    Before anybody buzzes, the day's news fills the board. After that, a tile's size is its share of the day's buzzes. One buzz beats any ranking, so a story from 1905 can push today's headline off. Your mark shows at once; the board redraws every hour.

  4. All day

    The crown changes hands

    The most buzzed story wears the crown. A tie does not take it, so the challenger needs one more buzz than the leader. The scoreboard over the board shows who is closest.

  5. Midnight Eastern

    It seals

    The night after the date, the board freezes as it stands, with the crown on whoever held it. That is the record, for good.

A tile's colour is how well it is sourced, not whether it is true: seen directly, reported once two different owners' pages check out, or claimed. Tap any headline for its receipt: every source, the quotation and every check.

Who made this

My name is Jason Evan Page and I built Birthed on my own. I made it because I wanted to know what people actually remember of a day, which is a different thing from what got written down about it, and nowhere kept that.

It costs me money to run and it does not make any. There are no ads on it, there is nothing on it to buy, and there is no company behind it. I am not collecting birthdays to sell, and the privacy page lists every single thing that is kept, down to the one cookie and what it is for. If you find something on this site that does not match what that page says, write to me and I will fix it the same day.

There is an iPhone app too, in beta on TestFlight, Apple's free app for trying apps before they are on the store. The website works without it.
